Fire and crash-risk recalls span 2022 to 2025. 8 NHTSA campaigns cover this trim, including 22V541000 (battery fire, 'do not drive') and 25V470000 (battery module failure, fire risk). Recalls 22V944000 and 25V395000 cite sudden loss of drive power. 3 of 9 filed NHTSA complaints involved crashes.
Value score 44 reflects 51% drop from launch MSRP. MSRP at launch: $56,395; KBB fair purchase now $27,700 — 51% below list. J.D. Power People Paid sits $25,905–$35,333. Depreciation steeper than class average signals weak resale but creates a compelling used-buyer entry point.
Range/efficiency score 64 trails class benchmark. EPA rates 301 miles on 18" wheels; class average real-world range is 87% of EPA. Owner reports show 25–40% range loss in cold weather. Car and Driver's 75mph highway test yielded 280 miles.
Software and Tech leads all dimensions at 92. iDrive 8's curved dual-screen, full-screen wireless CarPlay, and 40mph hands-free highway assist rate class-best across Car and Driver, i4Talk, and multiple independent reviews. Harman/Kardon audio consistently rated S-tier.
Owner satisfaction and battery health both rate strong. Battery averages 93% SOH at 60,000 miles. KBB reports 100% recommendation rate; UK MOT data shows 7% fewer defects than the 2022 fleet average. Owners switching from Tesla cite superior build quality and driving dynamics.
The 2022 BMW i4 eDrive40 Gran Coupe scores 70/100, led by a class-best 92 in Software & Tech and 75 in Owner Satisfaction. The primary concern is recall volume: 8 NHTSA campaigns filed 2022–2025 include 2 with fire risk in the consequence (22V541000, 25V470000) and 3 citing sudden loss of drive power. Three of 9 filed complaints involved crashes. Range/Efficiency at 64 trails class peers — expect 25–40% degradation in cold weather from the 301-mile EPA figure. Value scores 44, reflecting steep depreciation: KBB fair purchase is $27,700 versus original MSRP of $56,395, a 51% drop. Used buyers get strong tech and driving dynamics at a discount, but must confirm all recalls are closed and software is current before purchase.

"I was concerned originally about range coming from a Tesla Y LR to a BMX i4 eDrive 40. I was willing to give up some range due to the many issues with the "Y", mainly "Ghost Braking". I took delivery of the i4 and about 2 weeks later I drove the i4 from my home in La Quinta, CA to San Diego, CA. I charged the i4 to 100% before leaving, drove the round trip 242 miles with out stopping to charge and still had 121 miles of range when I pulled into my garage. I never could have done this with the "Y"!!! It wasn't a fluke as I frequently drive r/t to Marina del Rey, CA (south of LA) similar distance to the SD trip with similar results... Absolutely, love the Bimmer and no issues. OBTW, real leather and other amenities that Tesla doesn't! #62· Dec 9, 2022 Took delivery of the i4 in late July and with almost all urban only driving got a steady 3.3 to 3.4 miles/kWh (Sacramento weather warm). Now that the ambient daytime temperature is in the 40s I am getting a steady 2.8 miles/kWh. Same 19" tires and using comfort mode; using heater instead of AC. Does the ambient temperature really make this big a difference on range or is something else going on?"
"SGinAZ Jan 8, 2023 My 2023 Aventurin & Tacora Red M Sport eDrive40 has Arrived! After 197 days my eDrive40 is sitting in my garage! Six months is the longest I've ever waited for a car but it was worth being patient. The i4 is amazing and after just a couple days I couldn't be happier. I don't yet have enough seat time to provide a review of handling and everyday driving... 189.3KEvolve2022 replied Jan 12, 2023 BMW i4 General Discussions Forum PoisonEye Feb 18, 2023"
"of cool to go through a modern BMW interior and see what's what and how I feel about certain things. Overall, I can already say that the quality in here is impressive. Of course, this car comes at a price point where you expect quality to be good. Uh, but it is a very hard materials where you want them. No piano shiny plastic except for a little bit here around the vents. Uh, but overall quality and very thought through cabin with just the right amount of tech. What also stands out immediately is the driving position. As soon as you sit in this car, you realize it's a car made for driving. A good example, if I'm looking at the screen on the camera, you can see the angles of the steering wheel, my arm and elbow, and my shoulder. It's very interesting. You can see that my shoulder is below the steering wheel line, and that the top of the steering wheel is almost at my nose. And that really gives you that commanding position right away. when as soon as you sit down, you feel like, oh, we're about to drive. And that's really nice. And I think that is also the aim and the purpose of maybe BMW in general, but especially of this shape car. Uh that it's it's not an like an attacking car, but as soon as you sit down, you feel like, oh yes, it's time to do some steering. And when you sit here, you sit low, of course, due to the form factor."
"View Photos On the road, both suspension setups feel engaging and well controlled. The version with the Dynamic Handling Package struck the same tone as the M50, with the adaptive damper system's Sport setting providing sharp response and the Comfort setting providing just what the name implies: agreeable daily-drive comfort. But the standard fixed damping of our West Coast tester didn't feel substandard, as it ingested all manner of road imperfections with aplomb and pasted a huge grin on our face when we pushed it hard in the mountains. We also found its steering to be accurate and predictable, even though it lacked the variable-ratio rack of the East Coast car."
"I test drove a BMW i4 MSport ProPack with adaptive suspension in May 2022. My wife has severe back problems. This was the 13th differen EV we had tried and the only one that she considered had an acceptable ride but only in Comfort mode. After only 100m in Sport mode she had me switch back to comfort because she found the ride completely unacceptable. The dealership advised me that the Sport model without adaptive suspension would have similar ride quality to the MSport ProPack in comfort mode. There seemed little point is spending the extra money on the adaptive dampers, if the car was to spend its life in confirm mode only. I was also able to specify 17" wheels on the Sport model, in the hope of further improving the ride quality. I now have the car and my wife considers the ride quality completely unacceptable. There is definitely a significant difference between a car with adaptive suspension in comfort mode and a car without adaptive suspension mode. I now have brand new BMW i4 that my wife refuses to ride in. Absolute disaster. If anyone wants the best possible ride available from a BMW i4, then the adaptive suspension is a must."
"This is a $100,000 car. So to praise it for not being too different despite being an EV is strange to say the least. You think it is a good thing to maintain a transmission tunnel when there is no transmission? No flat floor when there is nothing but batteries below? Having 1/3 of the car being a bonnet in which there is neither an engine nor storage is a good thing? It smacks of stupidity to me. When we transitioned from using an abacus to a calculator would it have been a good thing to keep the beads? No. it wouldn't. We were smarter back then. This confirms we have gone backwards, well BMW have at least. But you can have this weird hybrid thingy for $100,000. A fool and his money are soon parted"
